Classic Cuban Cars
About a third of the vehicles in
Cuba are vintage American cars from before the revolution in 1959, which are
lovingly maintained. I took these pictures in 2002 while attending the Havana
Film Festival.
I took a ride in a 1954 Pontiac Chieftain that had been converted to a Taxi and
asked the driver if the engine was original. He laughed for a bit and then told
me that the engine was a Bulgarian diesel, the transmission was Romanian, the
differential was Russian, and the wheels and axle were Cuban. Then spreading his
arms he smiled and said, "pero tiene puro estilo Americano" (but it has pure
American style).
